Study Overview and Scope

As the societal and economic impacts of COVID-19 continue to mount, executive compensation practices are poised to change in ways not seen in over 10 years. Falling share prices and shifting business prospects mean companies are already adjusting plans set in motion just a few short weeks ago. Fresh insights on how your peers are handling these changes will be critical in the months ahead.

Against this backdrop, our 2020 Hot Topics in Executive Compensation Study promises to be consequential, and includes questions specifically focused on ways companies are actively and/or potentially changing their executive compensation programs in light of current market conditions.

In addition to helping clients get a pulse on shifting market dynamics, this year’s study covers all of the core design issues executive compensation professionals require, including:

  • Expected compensation actions related to COVID-19;
  • Executive compensation priorities for 2020;
  • Planned base salary adjustments;
  • Annual incentive practices;
  • Equity grant vehicle mix and practices;
  • Exclusions and amendments to incentive plan targets;
  • Evaluation and monitoring of realizable pay;
  • Current governance policies and practices, including Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) considerations;
  • Board leadership structure; and
  • Current outreach practices to shareholders.
